LAKE KARIBA AND MATUSADONA NATIONAL PARK
Matusadona National Park gets its name from the rolling Matusadona hills that form part of THE water rich landscape OF LAKE KARIBA.
Flanked by Lake Kariba in the north, and two perennial rivers, the Ume and the Sanyati, this remote and rugged region is incredibly diverse and beautiful. Proclaimed a National Park in 1975, it was once a conservation stronghold for African elephant and black rhino, and a sought-after tourism destination. Over the years due to limited resources, and increasing human wildlife contact this region suffered, and fell off the tourism radar. Now, as Zimbabwe stages its comeback so has Lake Kariba and Matusadona National Park. Under new management and with a greater tourism presence, we believe that a visit to Lake Kariba and Matusadona National Park should absolutely be considered for a trip to Zimbabwe.
With its diverse landscape, wildlife rich waters, and iconic sunsets it is easy to understand why Zimbabweans have always maintained that Lake Kariba and Matusadona are such a special destination. From sunset boat cruises, productive game drives, rewarding bush walks, or simply sitting back and enjoying the views across Lake Kariba there is so much to see and experience.
Seasons
In April, Lake Kariba and Matusadona begins its transition into winter. By June, the temperature and humidity drop, and days remain comfortable. Temperatures average in the 70s during the day, and nights become cold and crisp. The lack of water in the surrounding bush in the dry winter months draws wildlife from the woodlands to the shores of Lake Kariba, generating impressive wildlife sightings.
Between September and October, temperatures begin to rise as the area awaits the coming rains to welcome summer. Days become warmer and reach the 90s. With the setting sun, temperatures drop comfortably at night. Typically, by the end of November the first substantial rain arrives. From December to April, the green season is in full force. The landscape is colored with lush green grass, bright feathers of resident and migratory birds, and vibrant wildflowers. The start of the rains and the subsequent abundance of fresh food signal the start to the birthing season for many species, and the area fills with a new generation of young.
