SAFARI DRIVES
You will depart camp and set out in search of Africa’s unique wild animals. In a 4x4 vehicle, specially designed for wildlife viewing, you will explore new sights and view of wildlife as they go about their daily life. Your guide will introduce you to animal dynamics special to their ecosystem, and will highlight animal behaviors, survival strategies, and adaptations.
BUSH WALKS
Your professional guide will take you on a walk to look at the smaller things you may not notice in a safari vehicle. Your guide will introduce you to a unique, close-up perspective of Africa’s wilderness. A bush walk provides a great opportunity to inspect animal tracks, bird watch, touch and smell flowers and plants, and listen to the sounds of the bush.
BOAT CRUISES
Lodges located near water often offer boat cruises. The type of boat varies by the location of the lodge. Boating adventures allow for superb bird watching and provide great views and photographic opportunities of hippos, elephants, crocodiles, and other animals that come to the water to drink.
NIGHT DRIVES
As your eyes adjust to the lack of light, your safari guide will use a spotlight to pick out lurking animals that roam in the night. Look out for the beam reflecting off the eyes of wildlife like porcupines, striped hyena or one of the elusive smaller cats. Many predators that spend the daylight resting come out in the dark of night!
CANOE OR KAYAK
Lodges located on or near water may offer canoeing or kayaking as a unique way to view wildlife along its shores. Where safe to do so, enjoy this active outing on the water.
SUNDOWNERS
Your guide will take you to a scenic viewpoint where you can enjoy a drink and celebrate the day’s events as the sun slowly slips below the vast African horizon.
COMMUNITY
Many lodges host traditional evenings with a chance to experience local cuisine and celebrations. Learn about local cultures, traditions, dances, and celebrations from the lodge’s staff.
MOKORO
Explore the Okavango Delta in Botswana in these traditional wood-carved canoes. Glide just above the surface of the water through the floodplain grasses and lily pads as your guide poles you through the Delta channels, searching for birdlife and larger mammals along the shores.
PRIMATE TREKKING
Trek through dense rainforest to spend time with gorillas or chimpanzees. This life-changing experience can be physically demanding but equally rewarding. These large charismatic primates are found in East and Central Africa.
HORSEBACK RIDING
Led by a guide, you will traverse Africa’s wilderness on horseback and take in the beautiful sights and sounds. Horseback riding provides a unique perspective of the bush. This activity is offered in certain locations and may be limited to persons with riding experience.
HOT AIR BALLOON
Soar above Africa in a hot air balloon! View animals as you glide effortlessly over the treetops and plains. Balloon rides are available at select lodges.
TREE HOUSE
Spend a night under a sea of stars sleeping in a private, luxurious hideaway raised above the African bush. From the comfort of a luxurious mosquito net and a bed dressed with fine linens, you can explore the Milky Way and count shooting stars as you fall asleep immersed in nature.
BUSH DINING
Savor a meal while you listen to the sounds of the bush or watch a herd of wildebeest move across a clearing. Many lodges will offer both bush breakfasts and dinners depending on location.
WILDLIFE HIDE
View and photograph wildlife from a unique perspective in a wildlife hide. Hides are built low to the ground and camouflaged into the bush, offering an immersive viewing experience.
CONSERVATION & COMMUNITY
Learn about the good work that lodges are doing to conserve, uplift, and protect their local communities and environment. Some lodges have ongoing onsite projects and invite you to participate.
FLY CAMPING
A popular activity in East Africa, fly camping is for adventurous travelers who yearn for a complete wilderness experience! Feel at one with nature as you sleep under the starry skies in a guarded tent. A mesh tent is carefully prepared with a comfortable mattress and fine linens. Spend a night in your own private space in nature and enjoy an unforgettable experience.
HELICOPTER FLIGHT
Gain a unique perspective of animals, migration paths, and landmarks from a helicopter. At certain locations, you can embark on a scenic helicopter flight as you transfer from one lodge to the next. This activity is available at select lodges.
SPA
Pamper yourself while on safari. Professional massage and wellness therapists have their own unique offering of treatments which can typically be booked upon arrival.
BIKE RIDING
Enjoy the splendor of the bush from two wheels! Cycling outings are tailored to meet the fitness levels of the guests. This activity is offered at select lodges.
FISHING
Africa is home to many unique fishing spots that offer opportunities to deep-sea fish and saltwater fly fish. Africa’s famous rivers are home to Africa’s Tiger Fish. This feisty fish attracts anglers from around the world. Some lodges require that you bring your own gear, while others keep their own selection of tackle and gear for you to use. All fishing is catch and release.
WINE TASTING
The Winelands of South Africa are home to special wineries that offer tastings and amazing views of the area’s distinct valleys and mountains. Many lodges throughout sub-Saharan Africa also boast incredible cellars filled with South African wines that they pair with meals and offer at wine tastings.
YOGA
Practice yoga to the sights and sounds of the Africa bush. You will feel rejuvenated and refreshed physically and mentally as you enjoy an unforgettable practice in a natural, peaceful space.
STARGAZING
Sit back and gaze into the starlit sky. As you become enveloped by the night sky, learn about the Southern Hemisphere’s constellations from your knowledgeable guide. The longer you stare, the more stars you see!
SNORKELING & SCUBA DIVING
The east coast of Tanzania, Mozambique, and South Africa offer world class snorkeling and diving in the warm, clear waters of the Indian Ocean. Some camps offer PADI courses and certification for first time divers at an additional cost.
